The Capsule Wardrobe

At Isabella Le Miliae, we strive for the balance between the environment and humanity. Our products are made of natural and sustainable materials, all in an effort to reduce waste as much as possible. We encourage our customers to be more environmentally conscious and opt for versatile fashion over disposable fashion. Investment pieces are the ones that are timeless, versatile and high-quality,  the ones you can buy once and own for many years.

“Fast fashion and our consumerist culture have tricked us into believing that we must own everything”  - and this results in closets full of clothes that we barely wear.

At ILM, we love the idea of building our capsule wardrobe. But what exactly is that? The term itself, “capsule wardrobe”, was invented by Susie Faux, the owner of a London-based boutique called Wardrobe. Susie Faux defined it as a limited number of essential  items that can be worn multiple seasons. The concept was then popularised in 1985 by American designer Donna Karan, when she released her “7 Easy Pieces” collection, with the aim to fill what she referred to as “a void in the marketplace” for a stylish and practical wardrobe designed with working women in mind.

The concept of a capsule wardrobe is to own only key items and go-to-pieces that you really like, the ones that fit you, suit your lifestyle perfectly and that can be worn on repeat to make your life way easier. It’s all about minimalism and building a collection of essential pieces that represents you.

But why should you adopt a capsule wardrobe? We found countless reasons why, but here are the most significant ones for us.

It saves you time

On average, how long do you think you’re spending in front of your closet trying to pick the perfect outfit every morning? By choosing carefully each piece you own, you’ll save you hell of a time. Imagine rolling out of bed and knowing that anything you pick will instantly make an outfit you adore. With a closet filled with ‘go-to’s” you can make that possible.

It saves you money

Honestly, would you rather buy one 300€ jacket that would last you multiple seasons or would you rather buy five new 100€ ones every season? High quality clothing will last way longer than cheap ones so if you think about it, a capsule wardrobe will save you a lot of money in the long run. And because every piece will count, you’ll be way more thoughtful in the choice you’ll make while shopping.

Capsule wardrobes supports human rights and the environment

You’ve probably heard about the controversies around fast-fashion. If you’re not familiar with it, fast-fashion describes a highly profitable business model based on replicating catwalk trends and high-fashion designs, and mass-producing them at low cost. This results in companies relying on workers, usually children, to work long, dangerous hours in factories for very little to no pay.

Fast-fashion not only harms human rights, but also the environment as it results in a massive amount of waste. The entire institution encourages the idea that clothing is disposable, and is not meant to last long-term.

By deciding to go against that mouvement, you're joining in the fight for fair treatment of factory workers and the need for eco-friendly manufacturing practices in the fashion industry. Buying from brands that respect fair labor practices as well as the environment, you stop supporting the ones that don’t.

Everything fits

At the end of the day, when going through everything you own and selecting only the essentials, you make sure those items are the ones you feel comfortable in and the ones that fit you best. You probably currently have in your closet pieces of clothing that you own for many years and that you are not even able to wear anymore because it is out of trend or because it became too small, or too big. Since you’ll have less pieces to choose from, you’ll have to be wise with the ones you keep. So if you pick wisely, you’ll be left with the best of your closest.

Our motto is one piece - endless possibilities.

We hope that you will treasure and enjoy wearing these items as much as we enjoyed creating them.

Dry Cleaning: Do you actually have to pay for it?

As a co-founder of ILM, I wanted to share our expertise on how you can look after our wonderful kimonos and save both the money and the climate by cleaning them at home yourself. P.S. For any stain that you are unable to remove, we recommend using professional dry cleaning services instead of trying to remove yourself.
Why did we fall in love with silk?

Sandra Dailidyte

We fell in love with silk due to its unique properties and chose silk as our foundation as we wanted every customer to feel like an Emperor. As Oscar de La Renta said silk does for the body what diamonds do for the hand.
